Camping & Caravanning
La Royale, a small deluxe campground in Southern France near Carcassonne
with camping pitches for tents, touring caravans and camping vehicles.

2008 CAMPING PROMOTION : PAY FOR 6 DAYS AND GET 1 FREE!
A small deluxe camping site in Villardonnel in Aude in Languedoc-Roussillon in Southern France.

Pretty, grassed camping site pitches. Mostly flat and spacious terrain partially shaded mainly by holm oak ( holly oak ) and frêne trees, for tents, touring caravans and camper vans with most camping emplacements enjoying panoramic views of Carcassonne in the Aude Valley and on the horizon, the French Pyrenees in the South of France, towards Spain and Andorra.
A shady camping pitch with plenty of room with panoramic views to the East and the South at Camping La Royale and the picture on the right shows the view from our camping site looking towards " La Cité " the medieval fortified town of Carcassonne and Carcassonne town centre. On the horizon you will see the Pyrenees and on a clear day the peaks of mountains in Spain and Andorra. This view is fantastic at night as the castle in Carcassonne is lit up and all the city lights of Carcassonne-town twinkle like tiny coloured jewels on black velvet. Photos:2003.

CAMPING SITE FEATURES INCLUDE:
Separate Ladies & Gents Hot Showers and Washbasins. [photos]
Gourmet food served alfresco (weather permitting).
Sinks for Dishwashing. Washing Machine.
Fully-Licensed. Complimentary Cabardès Wine.
10-Amp / 2300 watt electricity supply from standard French-style sockets.

The campsites shady pitches behind the farmhouse. Left and Centre photo:2003.  Far right, camping pitches to the East with electricity. The castles of Lastours are 10 kms over the ridge of trees in the background. Not a lot of shade in this part of the camping site but the views of Carcassonne and valley of Aude from these emplacements on the campsite are absolutely fantastic! (Photo:2004) And on the 14th July, from La Royale campground, you can watch and enjoy the magnificent firework display staged from the medieval castle in Carcassonne.
2008 CAMPING SPECIAL OFFERS : 7 DAYS FOR THE PRICE OF 6
Searching for CARCASSONNE CAMPSITES? - take a closer Look at  La Royale, A small DELUXE CAMPING site in Aude, IN SOUTHERN  FRANCE, near Carcassonne!
Camping on the Southern foothills of the Montagne (Mountain) Noire (Black) with panoramic views of Carcassonne and the Valley of Aude, in the South of France, the sunshine, nature, fresh air and fun of this camping holiday combined with the great facilities on site and entertainment in the region, is what makes camping at La Royale, a small, family-run camping site,an unforgettable camping holiday!

DELIMITED CAMPING PITCHES Some campsites or campgrounds have hedged or fenced-off camping pitches or emplacements which are allocated to you to site your caravan or tent but we use a "camping zone" which is a large area behind and to the East of the farmhouse, which is dedicated for camping. Click here to see a plan view of the camping terrain. It means you may camp wherever you think is a good spot. Some prefer a lot of shade, and others demand the baking sun! Whether you enjoy an awesome sunrise or a breathtaking sunset, you'll find just the right place to relax and set up camp. Is Camping La Royale one of the better touring caravan sites in Southern France? Touring Caravans, Motor Homes and Camping Cars are very welcome at La Royale BUT before you decide on staying at our camping site, please see our Questions page regarding the use of chemicals. You can dispose of your kitchen sink or other waste water here, but we must say NO to certain chemical products.

WHAT IS CAMPING AT LA ROYALE GOING TO COST AND CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME EXAMPLES? See our Camping Site Tariff  page for full details but here below are some typical examples of 2008 camping pitch prices. The price for 7-days camping shown in brackets includes our 2008 camping promotion.

Camping: 2 adults and one child aged 6 or over & one infant aged 5 or less without electricity 27 euros per day  (7 days = 162 euros)
Camping: 2 adults and electricity 21 euros per day (7 days = 126 euros)
Camping: 2 adults without electricity 18 euros per day (7 days = 108 euros)
Camping: 2 adults and 2 children aged 6 or over without electricity 36 euros per day (7 days = 216 euros)
Camping: 2 adults and two infants aged 5 (or less) with electricity 21 euros per day (7 days = 126 euros)

SO HOW CAN I WORK OUT THE TOTAL PRICE FOR CAMPING? Remember that I ignore your camping vehicle or tent when calculating the camping price.  The camping price is not based on whether you bring tents, or touring caravans, or motor homes or camping cars whatever their size. It is also free to park your car. My camping pitch prices are based solely on the number of people (children aged 5 or less are free) and that price remains the same, regardless of the time of year. And don't forget about our camping promotion, which is: Pay for 6 days Camping and get 1 Day Free, explained in more detail below.

OUR 2008 CAMPING PITCH PROMOTION. If you pay for 6 days camping you get one day FREE, so when you are working out your camping pitch prices, comparing quotes from other camping sites and reckoning the overall cost of your camping holiday, please don't forget about my camping holiday offer.  The "7 days camping for the price of 6" promotion was very popular in 2006 and 2007, so we are doing it again for 2008.

HOW BIG IS YOUR RIG? We currently do not have mobile-homes or fixed caravans for rental but we can accommodate large (within reason) camper vans, motor homes, large touring caravans and big tents and at no extra supplement. Although, if you do bring something enormous like a large motor-home towing a trailer, your choice of camping pitch locations will be limited by virtue of the accessibility to the general camping terrain such as to permit turning, reversing and any gradient issues. A good example was last year when we had a large motor home towing 2 racing cars on a trailer. They had to park-up where it was best for the vehicles, all things considered. In any event, campground emplacements are strictly limited so that everybody enjoys a lot of space and the sanitary facilities are never crowded.

ARE YOU ON YOUR WAY TO OR FROM CAMPING SITES IN SPAIN, ANDORRA OR IN THE PYRENEES? Because a camping pitch at Domaine La Royale, just outside the village of Villardonnel, near Carcassonne, could be your ideal campsite location to stop in Southern France and spend a couple of days en route on your way to or from camping sites in Spain, Andorra or in the French Pyrenees (as many campers do). For example, you are 3 hours away by car from the Costa Brava in Spain which is a nice leisurely day's drive with the caravan in tow. So why not take a break from all the travelling and set up camp for a day or two here at our camping site and go exploring the local mountain villages and lakes in the Montagne Noire or visit the magical medieval walled city in Carcassonne and the Cathare castles in Lastours? If you are looking for a camping site in the South of France near Spain, Andorra and the Pyrenees, our campsite near Carcassonne in Southern France might be a great place to camp for a day or two?

IS CAMPING DOMAINE LA ROYALE ONE OF THE PREMIER CAMPING SITES? Read what campers have said about our campsite and camping facilities on the Guest Book page and for camping prices and reservation details, please see our Camping Site Tariff page.

YOUR CAMPING WEATHER FORECAST. What's our camping weather like? Our region of Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, does have a lot of sunshine and typically, it's sunny with blue skies, hot and dry in June, July and August. Please have a look at our Temperatures page which gives an average temperature in the shade here at La Royale, around mid-afternoon. Average rainfall in June, July and August amounts to just a hour or so, once every 7-10 days. Camping in the month of May is very nice too, still hot and sunny but a little more rain which is great for the camping sites' grass which is always kept neat and regularly cut.

WILL IT RAIN TOMORROW? In the South of France, it is not uncommon to go for two or maybe three weeks without any rain during the Summer months. Fantastic for camping, especially those people camping in tents, but not so good for my shrubs! To help campers make the most of their holiday, I normally post a daily weather-forecast for the Carcassonne area on the notice-board in the campers' sanitary facility, to help you plan your camping holiday ahead.

WHEN IS LA ROYALE'S CAMPING SITE OPEN? Our campsite is closed during September, October, November, December, January, February, March and April. Officially, Camping La Royale is open from the 25th May until 24th August, inclusive.

CAMPSITE RESERVATIONS. To offer the widest choice of camping pitches to those of you who have reserved camping space, our advice is to arrive at lunchtime or just afterwards, because those campers departing that day will have already left and campers without a reservation do not normally arrive until later in the afternoon. Our camping site reception opens at 10.30AM. Please check-in no later than 7.00PM.

TAKE THE BEST ROUTE. The route via Villardonnel commonly published in the annual camping guides is NOT suitable for large or articulated vehicles. Those of you bringing large motor-homes or twin-wheeled touring caravans please see our Directions page which describes two other routes to La Royale campground. If you are in any doubt which route to take, choose one of the alternative routes for longer and wider vehicles and don't attempt to drive through the village of Villardonnel.

Motoring for the first/second/third time around France? A few motoring tips can be found on our
Driving in France
page. One or two of them might make you smile :-) There is a driving tip about a potentially dangerous "I'm towing a 40' trailer" syndrome, written for the benefit of motorcyclists.

READ OUR QUESTIONS PAGE. Before you make a camping pitch reservation, please look through the frequently-asked-questions on our Questions ??? page so that you are fully-conversant with our camping site and La Royale's general facilities.

Photo: July 2006.The medieval walled city of Carcassonne is located just to the left of the pylon middle-distant in the centre of the picture - look for a grey oval shape. Not easy to see clearly in the morning daylight, the old city of Carcassonne and castle is readily visible as the sun moves across the sky from about 4pm onwards. The medieval walled city of Carcassonne is about 20 km by road from La Royale (25 mins in the car). The other 5 below were taken of La Royale in May 2007.

Our camping site sanitary facilities are clean and safe for babies and toddlers.

Why? Because we use bleach, cleaning products and plenty of elbow-grease.
