INDIAN CURRY HOUSE RESTAURANTS
in Carcassonne, Aude.

Because
I like to eat my own body-weight in curry every year, here are two good Indian Restaurants,
also referred to as a Curry House
or Balti House, in Carcassonne town centre.
Personally, I prefer Vindaloo or Phall because I have become accustomed
to chillies (or should they be called "hotties" :-) and the subtle flavours
in the food doesn't "disappear" in all the "heat" as you might think.
We all know about Korma which is traditionally mild (but actually, can be
served at any heat). The next hottest is a "medium curry". Up from that is a
Madras, which is very popular. Next hottest, a Vindaloo, and then hotter
still, a Phall. Apparently, the word "Phall" means "bottom-ripping"
! Hotter than a Phall curry is Tindaloo !
The hottest
curry you are ever likely to want to try and eat is a Tindaloo. If you ask
Chef to prepare you a Tindaloo and he doesn't know your taste in curries,
he will either flatly refuse or ask you several times if you are absolutely sure.
And don't be surprised if you are watched by all the restaurant staff as you try
and chew your first mouthful :-) You have been warned!
TIP: If you
find that the curry you ordered is hotter than you expected and you are struggling
a bit but nevertheless still enjoying it, ask for a Raita which is yoghurt
mixed with either chopped onion or cucumber or both (mixed Raita). This has
the immediate effect of "cooling" the tongue. Often this yoghurt mixture is served
with "poppadums" and the onion or cucumber is substituted with cream or milk
and mixed with a little mint sauce.
Just before I go, a bit about
Naan Bread. Peshwari Naan contains sultanas
and coconut (my favourite). Keema Naan contains
meat. It's kind of like a bready-pancake-pizza thing, Indian style. It can
often be a meal in itself, so best just to order the one and share.

speaks perfect English and can make anything you want if it's not on his
menu. The menu is written in both French and English and many of his dishes
I would expect to find in any UK Indian Restaurant including top curry
house favourites such as Chicken Korma, Vindaloo and
Chicken Tikka Massala. I have recently sampled Chef's meat Phall
which was very tasty indeed!

Chef
speaks a bit of English and is aware of UK Curry House favourites although
his cuisine leans towards the French style of curries. Nothing wrong with
that, in fact, my wife prefers his menu to the choice typically found in
many UK restaurants. Chef's Poulet Punjabi, Chelly Agneau
and Legumes Mixte are my personal favourites although I do ask him
to add more heat to suit my particular taste, which he is happy to do.

but it gives you a taste (sorry!) of his Indian cuisine. Don't forget, the
prices may have changed - so double-check when you place your order
for a take-away curry.
And remember, he can prepare most anything you want if you can't
see anything you fancy.
