RETAIL BANKING IDEAS

...to help the UK's recycling initiative and help minimise fraud.

SHREDDERS

Any Bank or Building Society manager reading this might think about installing a shredder in bigger branches so that customers could shred their own bank or financial correspondence or other sensitive documents, free-of-charge, by entering their account or a pin number into the shredding machine or asking a member of your banking staff to shred the paperwork after providing proof that they are one of your customers. The shredded paper could then be submitted for recycling.

It's unlikely that customers are going to take their private correspondence down to the paper recycling depot because it could end up blowing about in the wind for anyone to find. How many customers have cardboard boxes at home or in their office, jam-packed with old correspondence but not knowing quite sure of where and how to dispose of it securely?

Importantly, Banks should display a sign near the shredding machine listing what customers are legally required to keep and for how long. For example, the notice might state how many years they are required to keep things like bank statements, pay-slips, tax certificates, visa-card statements or year-end accounts, to name but a few.

CONFIDENTIAL WASTE SACKS

A paper shredder for customer use in every branch is too expensive? What about supplying customers, especially small businesses who can't afford a decent shredder, large paper sacks entitled "PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL WASTE PAPER". They could them fill them and take them into a nominated branch for disposal. It might not give the customer the same feeling of comfort as seeing their private paperwork shredded right in front of them but at least it's an alternative. Sure, you are likely to get the odd apple-core or drinks-can in the sack but I'm sure that your disposal company would sort that out at their end. Maybe you could offer the bags in the smaller branches and install a shredder in the bigger branches so that your customers would have the choice?

PHISH & CHIPS

High-Street banks might also install a secure bin where customers can dispose of their old debit or credit cards. Your customers would have peace-of-mind that they had disposed of them properly. I don't know too much about this, but can the chips in the card be recycled? Could they be bulk erased by a strong electro-magnetic field for example, and then re-programmed? How many millions of cards expire every year and are chucked in with the household rubbish?

The general instructions are normally to cut through the old card, but how many customers actually do that? Now that the magnetic strip on the back of the card is no longer used at EPOS and with the chip & pin system in place, how many customers also cut through the chip? If found in the household rubbish, could that old card still be used a few days before the old card expires but with that customer already in receipt of and using their new replacement card? And if that old card (which is just about to expire) is thrown in the bin simply bent in half and later found (with or without correspondence relating to the pin number) could it be used again fraudulently, perhaps to make a purchase on-line?

What is the UK's population - 60 million or thereabouts? Have many have cards and how many cards do they have each? Collectively, would used chips be worth anything as scrap metal (Au) for re-processing? How many cards does your banking group issue per year across the UK? Perhaps you might be able to offer a small incentive to every customer who disposes of their old cards at your branches should your "chip recycling project" become viable? Or, you may consider to donating £1 towards charity for every card returned for recycling?
